Rider driven and rider produced, the Float project was created during the 2006-07 winter season by professional snowboarder Erin Valverde and cinematographer John Roderick. The film documents the progression of women’s riding, while providing a glimpse into the lifestyle that is women’s snowboarding. The film’s riders all contributed to shaping the direction of the film - by incorporating their ideas and resources, making this film one of a kind. With influence from surf films, Float’s crew produced a project that is an honest representation of where female snowboarding is today — a unique and amazing film highlighting the people and places shaping the women’s snowboard industry.
We love this film — down to earth and real… FLOAT film incorporates all the key elements of an entertaining and inspiring snowboard flick. Incredible cinematography, amazing riding, great rural and well-known locations, and up-close and personal rider narration makes FLOAT film a must-see this season — and one of our all-time favs!
Riders include Chanelle Sladics, Kimmy Fasani, Jamie Anderson, Lisa Filsmoser, Silvia Mittenmuller, Caroline Beliard, Barrett Christy, Caroline Onzik, Erin Valverde, Maribeth Swetkoff, Izzy Lalive, Meghann O’Brien, Melissa Evans, Sachi Tanaka, Laura Hadar, Marie-France Roy, and many more.
Locations include Japan, Idaho, Harbin, China, Mt. Baker, Winter Park and much more. Check out FLOAT Film.

The first evidence of any skiing appeared in 4500 year old Stone Age rock carvings discovered around the Arctic rim. For 3500 years, man slid on snow out of utility and telemark skiing was used a means to traverse and hunt during winter months. Now, however, telemark skiing is not just a means of transportation and not just for men charging down these hills. Women are free-heeling as well… and en masse. And no longer is telemarking just for “tree hugging hippies,” as it may have once have seemed throughout the evolution of alpine skiing. Now it is super fun, progressive, challenging sport for any snow-loving, adventure seeker.
Over the past couple of decades, telemark skiing has progressed leaps and bounds beyond popular conceptions of the sport. Boots are now made of plastic (en lieu of the leather variety) and bindings can be mounted on any pair of skis available on the market. Even more exciting is that the style of telemark skiing continues to evolve, with various “looks” available for the telemark skiing fashionista. And many companies have even created telemark specific boots and skis — especially for women. Yes, man has evolved considerably over 4,000 years, with tele skiers infiltrating not only the backcountry, but also the terrain parks and everywhere on the hill.
So, for all those out there, wanting to try a little tele action, or brush up on your skills… Loveland Ski Area is offering Women’s Telemark Clinics this winter. On January 16th, February 13th, and March 12th, buckle up your telemark boots and come out to have fun tele-skiing.
Besides let’s face it, winter’s a hard time of year to keep in shape, but with telemark skiing the perfect rear end is never far behind.

Adaptive Action Sports
Founded in 2005, Adaptive Action Sports champions the use of action sports as a rehabilitative tool for permanently disabled youth and adults. The organization’s 26-year-old co-founder, Amy Purdy, an accomplished snowboarder and a double below-the-knee amputee lost her legs when she was 19. As she struggled with rehab, Amy was discouraged by the fact that she was unable to connect with resources that would help her return to snowboarding… so she set out to change all that by founding Adaptive Action Sports. An incredible organization with an incredible mission — this snowboarding turned business team of Amy Purdy and Daniel Gale created a place for disabled action sports athletes to gather, find support and excel. An organization needed in the action sports industry… and worthy of much praise. Check out Adaptive Action Sports.
